Isla Vista School of Discipleship – Spring Quarter
The heart of the Isla Vista School of Discipleship is to continue to grow a culture of faith, family, and love for the King and His Kingdom. For the next two quarters the IVSOD will adopt a new format (a family format) to increase learning, strengthen relationships, and promote lifestyles of faith working through love. It will be called, “The Normal Christian Life.”
The Scriptures make it clear that Jesus is the standard for living the normal Christian life. Our goal with this family class is to teach every believer what we believe are the fundamentals of living like Jesus lived.
There are six one-month sections in the curriculum, each centered on a pillar of the Christian life, with a book that we will study together (one book per month). Here are the pillars:
Identity (WINTER): Victory over the Darkness by Neil Anderson. When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, all of His temptations were centered around one thing: His identity. Knowing who we are in Christ is essential to living a victorious Christian life.
The Cross (WINTER): Mystical Union by John Crowder. The cross is the most powerful and essential part of the Christian life. Without it, the overcoming life in God is impossible. This section is about discovering what Jesus did for us on the cross: “It’s finished.”
Holy Spirit (WINTER): Forgotten God by Francis Chan. Jesus said that it was better for Him to leave us, so that He could send us the Holy Spirit. Why was that? What does the Holy Spirit do? More importantly, who is He? Here, we will explore the often overlooked third member of the Trinity.
The Power of God (SPRING): When Heaven Invades Earth by Bill Johnson. Paul said that the kingdom of God is not a matter of words, but of power. This section is about God’s power, why and when He uses it, and how to see Him work powerfully in your life.
Hearing God (SPRING): You May All Prophesy by Steve Thompson. Every good relationship involves communication, and this section is about learning to hear God for ourselves and for others. We will also talk about prophecy in this section.
The Kingdom (SPRING): Power Evangelism by John Wimber. This section is about learning to see the world as a struggle between two kingdoms: the kingdom of darkness and the kingdom of His beloved Son (Col 1:13). We will learn about “power encounters,” “divine appointments,” and “signs and wonders” in relation to evangelism.
* Weekly meeting: we will meet weekly on Wednesdays from 8pm to 10pm to discuss the book we are reading, hang out, give testimony, and pray for one another (location: 6737 IV).
